The papers cover Stanley's tenure as President of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1984 to 1986. The collection is almost exclusively correspondence, with a few files related to various subjects. The papers have been divided into four series based on their original order: (1) Correspondence-Concerns, (2) Subjects, (3) Congratulations correspondence, and (4) Encourgement correspondence. Significant files are included on: abortion, Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs, the controversy within the Southern Baptist Convention, Baptist agencies and women's ordination.
